Furman University Libraries Furman University is a highly selective, independent liberal arts college of 2800 undergraduate and graduate students and 234 faculty. It is distinguished by its commitment to engaged learning, a problem-solving, project-oriented approach to education that involves students as active participants in the learning process through undergraduate research, service learning, internships, foreign study, and other activities. Furman is a caring community that seeks to nurture the whole person intellectually, socially, spiritually, and physically. The Furman Libraries reflect the university's rigorous academic program and emphasis on engaged learning. The library's 13 faculty and 15 staff members are dedicated to the continuing development of excellent library resources and services. As a relatively small institution we emphasize flexibility and teamwork. Library faculty and staff alike are provided with opportunities for participation in a variety of different areas in an organization where creative new ideas are welcomed. They have a close connection to both students and faculty, with a history of collaborative library/faculty projects. Support for library resources at Furman is strong, with a total library budget of over $2 million and a resources budget of over $1 million. Furman's 750 acre campus, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is recognized as one of the most beautiful in the nation. It is located fifteen minutes from downtown Greenville, South Carolina, one of the South's most prosperous and international cities with a metropolitan population of 450,000 and an excellent array of cultural events, restaurants, and shopping. The campus is also just forty-five minutes from Asheville, North Carolina which provides a wide variety of outdoor recreation and entertainment opportunities. This is an especially exciting time to work at the Furman Libraries. The James B. Duke Library has recently undergone a $25 million expansion and renovation. This project has tripled the main library's seating capacity, doubled its collection capacity, and allowed the library to provide a variety of new technological facilities and services. Planning has also begun for a new science library in conjunction with a future expansion and renovation of science facilities. Both librarians and library staff at Furman have an excellent benefits package, including domestic partner benefits. Librarians have non-tenured faculty status.
