Instruction/Access Services Librarian


Furman University, one of the nation's top-ranked liberal arts colleges, is seeking a talented and motivated librarian for the position of Instruction/Access Services Librarian.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate serves as an active member of the library's instructional services team. Provides reference service, including evening and weekend rotation. Supervises the personnel and activities of the Circulation/Reserves Department. Collaborates with branch librarians on access service activities. Serves as liaison to various academic departments.

REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited Master's of Library Science. Three years of experience in academic libraries. Teaching experience. Knowledge of circulation and reserves issues, including current trends and innovations. Familiarity with library information technology. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and commitment to public services.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salaries are competitive and commensurate with experience. Librarians have faculty status, 10 paid holidays, 20 days vacation, and an excellent benefits package, including domestic partner benefits.

Title

Instruction/Access Services Librarian

Job Summary

Participates fully in the library's curriculum-integrated information fluency program and in reference-related activities. Responsible for leadership of Access Services and for the planning, supervision, and evaluation of circulation and reserve services.

Reports To

Director of Libraries

Supervises

Two full-time and one part-time staff members in Access Services, which employs approximately 40 students.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Information Fluency Instruction

  • Serves as an active member of the library's instructional services
  • Collaborates with teaching faculty members to design and teach the Information Fluency component for First-Year Seminars
  • Works with teaching and library faculty to integrate information skills throughout the undergraduate curriculum

Reference

  • Provides reference service including evening and weekend rotation.
  • Participates fully in the activities of the Reference Department including collection development, selection and evaluation of reference resources and electronic resources

Access Services

  • Supervises the personnel and activities of the Circulation/Reserves Department
  • Coordinates the planning and evaluation of circulation and reserves services at the Duke Library
  • Collaborates with branch librarians on access service activities
  • Communicates with university regarding circulation and reserve policies
  • Prepares memos, handouts, reports and statistical compilations as requested

General

  • Serves as liaison to various academic departments
  • Actively pursues professional development through service on Library and University-wide committees, participation in professional organizations, and review of professional literature
  • Functions as a member of the University faculty, including attendance at faculty meetings, academic advising, membership on faculty committees
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

  • Master's of Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school

  • Experience in circulation, reserves, reference, and instruction
  • Familiarity with the liberal arts college environment
  • Web authoring experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III) integrated library system
