When Dr. John L. Plyler became President of Furman University, much in his life had prepared him for the role. He was familiar with the area, having been born in Travelers Rest and having served as a teacher and coach at Greenville High School. He was familiar with the university, since many members of his family, including his father, had attended Furman, and Plyler himself had graduated from the institution with a Liberal Arts degree. He served as a faculty member, Dean of the Law School and was elected to the Board of Trustees prior to his tenure as president. While this exhibition will highlight many ways in which Furman University shifted and adapted during Dr. Plyler's tenure, it will also showcase his impact and contributions.
