Borrowing Library Materials

Who can borrow library materials?
Furman University students, faculty, and staff can borrow most library materials. Circulation privileges are also provided to major donors to the library and to Furman alumni. The library has agreements with several area colleges and universities; students and faculty at other institutions should check with their campus libraries to determine the terms of these agreements. Other members of the local community not associated with the University are welcome to use the library, but must use materials on the premises. All patrons must have a picture ID in order to borrow materials.

What items can be borrowed?
Students and staff can check out most books for 21 days and media items for 7 days. Faculty members can check out most books for 91 days, media items for 7 day, and bound periodicals for 3 days. Some items, such as current periodicals, rare books, and reference books, never circulate.

How to Renew a Book
If you need to keep books beyond the first due date, they can usually be renewed at the Circulation Desk in person or by calling 294-2190. Items that have been requested by another patron cannot be renewed.

Fines
General and Lesiure Books - $0.10/day
Media - $1.00/day
Reserves - varies (see Reserves section)

Faculty and staff do not incur fines unless an item has been recalled for use by another patron. If recalled, the fine is the normal fine from the new date due.

As a courtesy the library sends recall and overdue notices for materials needed in the library. Notices are sent to the address listed in the Registrar's Office or the Personnel Office as of the beginning of the term. Therefore, patrons are encouraged to report changes of address to the library Circulation Desk when checking out materials, as well as to the Registrar's Office or the Personnel Office. Non-receipt of a recall or an overdue notice does not negate any fines which may be incurred.

All patrons are charged if they lose a book. Lost book charges are calculated at the replacement cost of the book plus a ten dollar ($10) processing fee. Any fines incurred for overdue items are added to the replacement cost and processing fee. Payment of lost book charges does not transfer ownership of the book to the patron.

Patrons are encouraged to pay fines and fees at the Circulation Desk before the end of the term in which they are incurred. Library charges not paid are referred to the Business Office for collection.

Borrowing items from other libraries
Furman University has reciprocal circulation agreements with many area college and university libraries, including Clemson and Wofford. To borrow items from any of these libraries, students and faculty need to come by the James B. Duke Library circulation desk first to get a South Carolina Library Borrowing Card.

Current Furman students, faculty and staff can also have the library obtain material through Interlibrary Loan.
