Frequently Asked Questions about NetLibrary's Electronic Books

  1. What username and password do I use?
You need to create an account for yourself while you are ON CAMPUS. Click the "Create Account" link and then fill in the information, choosing any username and password that you like, and can remember. Then you will be able to read and download the books from anywhere, by using your own username and password.
  2. Is there a list of all of the e-books that the library has?
    Yes. It is available here.
  3. Can I search ALCUIN (the library's catalog) for electronic books on my topic?
Yes. Do a keyword search in ALCUIN for "netlibrary and your topic"
  4. Can I read books off-line?
Yes, unless you use a Macintosh. To do this, you need to download the netLibrary e-book reader, then download any book you choose. It should show up in the bottom right corner of your e-book reader, in the area labeled "My eBooks." Unfortunately, there is no NetLibrary e-book reader available for Macs at this time, and the books are not compatible with other e-book readers.
  5. Why do some books have an "expiration" while others don't?
The 7000 books which we have purchased may be "checked out" for 3 days. A book is "checked out" by clicking either the "Read this book Online" link or the "Download this book to read Offline" link. The expiration date is the date and time the book is due back. While you have a book "checked out," no one else is able to read the book. When your check-out period expires, the book will automatically be available to others. Even if the book is still on your hard drive, you will not be able to read it if it has expired. You will need to check it out again. If you finish a book early, it is nice to go ahead and "return" it, so that others may use it. To return a book early from the web page, go to "My e-Books" and then select "Return eBook to Library" from the pull down menu next to your book. Other books in netLibrary are "public domain," meaning that they are no longer under copyright. These books do not expire, and may be kept on and read from your hard drive for as long as you would like. Others may read these books even though you have them checked out too.
  6. If I download a book, will it automatically be deleted from my hard drive when it expires?
No. You will need to delete it yourself.
  7. Why aren't there more e-books on my topic?
We are just beginning to test this new medium for information delivery. We want to make sure it is effective before we invest anymore money in it.
