Most online databases only go back to the 1980's. These are some sources you can use to locate older articles for historical research.
JSTOR
JSTOR is a full-text database of major scholarly journals going back their first issues, some of which appeared in the 19th century.
Readers Guide Retrospective
Readers Guide Retrospective indexes hundreds of magazines covering the period from 1890 to 1982. This database does not include the full text of articles, but most of the magazines indexed can be found in the library collection.
Humanities and Social Science Index Retrospective
Indexes nearly 1,200 periodicals, as far back as 1907. Citations to more than 1,300,000 articles, including over 240,000 book reviews. Indexes scholarly journals published throughout the 20th century in North America and Europe. In addition to coverage of the humanities and social sciences, the database covers many scientific journals through the 1950's.
American Periodical Series Digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals published from colonial days to the dawn of the 20th century.
New York Times Historical
New York Times Historical contains the full image of every issue of the New York Times from 1851 to 1999. More recent issues of the Times are available in other databases, but this is the only access to the entire run of the paper throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
Full text-full image of the Washington Post 1877-1989. Each year the coverage increases by a year.The years since 1989 are found full text via Lexis-Nexis.
