Part one focuses on how the Torah has bound one generation of Jewish people to another and traces the development of Judaism from the establishment of synagogue worship in Babylonia. It examines the first reading of the Torah during the Babylonian exile, the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, the establishment of a stronghold at Masada, and the building of synagogues throughout the world. The second part of the program focuses on Jews who fled the Spanish Inquisition to North Africa, the Rhine area, and Eastern Europe, investigating how Jewish traditions survived despite geographic shifts. It also examines the development of the Talmud and looks at the influence of such major commentators as Rashi, Rav Yitzchak Caro, and the Maharal.
