This encyclopedia should be the starting point for all music research.   Lengthy entries provide a rich scholarly overview of composers, musical styles, important musical centers, instruments, and other topics.  Articles are signed and include a bibliography for further research.
The New Grove Dictionary of American Music.  Volumes 1-4

American composers and musical topics are given extensive treatment from the perspective of U.S. culture and society.  Content of many articles differs from that found in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.  Articles are signed and include a bibliography for further research.

Scholarly articles provide extensive coverage of a variety of jazz styles, composers, performers, and other topics.  Articles are signed and include a bibliography for further research.
The New Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll

Articles tend to be brief yet contain humanizing biographical information not found in The Guiness Encyclopedia of Popular Music. Includes individual musicians and groups.  Limited to rock and its derivatives.
The Guiness Encyclopedia of Popular Music. Volumes 1-6

Scholarly in tone, articles include biographical information and lists of albums, suggestions for further reading, films, etc.  Includes individuals and groups from all varieties of popular music.
Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians

Basic biographical entries include birth and death dates, career highlights, and works composed.

Oxford Reference Online

Select "Performing Arts" subject for reference books on general music and opera.
Other sources available at the Music Library Others include dictionaries of musical terms, encyclopedias of instruments and women composers, song indexes, guides to musical research, and guides to writing about music.

To find books on music and musical scores in this library, use ALCUIN, our online catalog.

Hints for books:

  • Use subject headings and their subdivisions to find specific and relevant information.
  • If you can't find a book on a specific composer or performer, broaden your search to include that person's genre of music (i.e. "rock music" or "blues").
  • Use WordCat to identify books at other libraries that you can acquire through interlibrary loan.

Hints for scores:

  • Search by composer as author.
  • Look for the uniform title for your work or use the "see" cross-references to get from the common title to the uniform title.


IIMP - International Index of Music Periodicals Index and abstracts to over 370 music journals with full text for 60. Can search by subject terms for recent articles (1995-present) but must use keyword searches for older articles.
Music Index
Indexes (no abstracts) over 670 music journals from 1979-present. Subject and keyword searching available for all years. The citations do not include abstracts. A print version is available in the Music Library for 1949-2001.
