Looking up Assigned Articles in MLA International Bibliography
  1. Connect to MLA.

  2. Click on the Index button on the right side of the screen.

  3. Change the dropdown list from General Index to AUI-Author Index.

  4. Type the name of the author whose work you're searching for into the Term box, then click the Go to Term button.

  5. Check the boxes next to every variant of this author's name (watch out for middle initials vs. middle names, Jr., hyphens, no hyphens, etc.) then click the Search Checked Terms button.

  6. Review the list of articles displayed and identify the one which was assigned to you in class. Click on the Record # link corresponding to this article.

  7. If you wish to print the citation for this article, click (in the window that opened in the preceding step) the Print button, then click the Print Records button, the OK button and the Close Window button.

  8. To obtain a copy of the article you have identified, first locate the SO field in the record for this article. This is the source field, which lists the title of the journal in which this article appears, the place this journal was published, and the year and volume information for this issue of the journal, along with the page numbers on which this article appears.

  9. Now you can check Alcuin, the library's online catalog, to see if the library subscribes to the journal in which this article was published. Don't forget to check not only whether the library subscribes to the journal, but also whether the library has the specific issue of the journal in which the article you're looking for appears.

  10. From the main Alcuin page click on Search, then Title, then type in the title of the journal you are searching for.

  11. Note the Location field(s) inside the journal holdings box(es). If the library has issues of this journal in more than one format there will be more than one holdings box. For example, you might see Current Periodicals, Bounds Periodicals, Microfiche Journals, Microfilm Journals or even all of these formats. Look at the volume number ranges (i.e., Bound: v. 1-43- ) to determine in which format the library has the specific issue you are looking for.

  12. At this point you can either close any remaining open windows and logout of the MLA database, or you can click (in the main MLA window) the Back to Search button and continue searching for the citation to your next article, beginning with step #2 above.
