Library News for Fall 2005
The Office of Academic Assistance is now making free tutoring services available in the library Monday through Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Help is available for the following GER courses: Biology 11, Chemistry 11 and 12, English 11, History 11, Math 10, 11, and 11s, Music 20, Religion 11, and Spanish 11 and 12. If you would like help, just come by the study area to the left of the Office of Academic Assistance on the ground floor of the library (040). Beginning Monday, September 26, there will be a construction project in the CCLC to create offices for the director and staff of the new Center for Teaching and Engaged Learning. Construction is expected to last until Friday, November 4.
The Year of the Library will officially conclude with three final events this fall: the Furman Literary Symposium, the Power of Words, and Clay Reflections on the Past and Future. For details on these and all former events you can go to Year of the Library. On November 10-11 library directors from the Associated Colleges of the South will convene at Furman to discuss plans for possible future collaborations. The ACS library directors planning to attend represent the following institutions: Birmingham-Southern, Centre, Centenary, Davidson, Furman, Hendrix, Milsaps, Morehouse, Spelman, Sewanee, Trinity, University of Richmond, and Washington & Lee, Also joining the group will be Wayne Anderson, President of the ACS. Deborah Harper has joined the library staff as Acquisitions/Financial Records Assistant. Deborah has a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and an Associate of Arts in Business from Mira Costa College. She comes to us most recently from the position of Acquisitions Supervisor at the J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNCC. Prior to that time she worked as a reported for the Charlotte Observer. Lauren Wood has joined the library staff as Reference/Government Documents Assistant. Lauren is a 2005 graduate of Furman University in History. As a student Lauren worked in Government Documents and conducted GIS projects related to the library and history in conjunction with Steve Richardson. She also served as an intern at the U.S. State Department. Derrick Stewart has rejoined the library on a temporary basis as Music Library Assistant. He will be managing the Maxwell Music Library during the search for a new music librarian. Derrick is a 2004 Furman graduate in Political Science. As a student he worked in the Circulation Department. He also served as an intern at the Office of Corporation Counsel in Washington, DC. Andrew Prymak will be serving as Special Collections & Archives Intern for 2005-06. Andrew is a 2005 graduate of Furman University in History. He will help draft a taxonomy for University Archives and inventory materials already collected in University Archives utilizing this new taxonomy. Andrew will also help redesign the University Archives section of the library website and create a template for University Archives entries. Melissa Bateman has moved into the position of University Collections Manager. Melissa is a 2002 graduate of Furman University in History who previously served as Special Collections & Archives Intern. She will maintain the inventory of decorative and fine art on campus. She will also serve as a campus resource regarding the care, conservation and preservation of these historic materials.
Dr. Janis Bandelin, Director of Libraries, has been elected to the board of directors of the Association of College and Research Libraries as Director-at-Large. She will serve a four year term steering this professional organization which is central to the work of college and university libraries throughout the country.
Librarians have been working with science faculty members, architects, and others to plan a new science library as part of the expansion of science facilities and the renovation of Plyler Hall. To help visualize possibilities the university brought Alison Ricker, science librarian at Oberlin College, to campus to meet with faculty, students, librarians, and administrators.
