Innovation & Design Process

Education - The administration of Furman University and the James B. Duke administrative staff have implemented programs to educate our students, faculty and staff, the regional design and development communities, national peer groups and the general public to create an awareness and demand for the transformation of general design and construction practices to sustainability.

Radon Venting - The Furman Campus is located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwest corner of South Carolina. This region has some of the highest subsurface concentrations of radon gas found in the USA; therefore the building addition was constructed with a sub-slab venting system to prevent radon gas from entering the building.

100% Recycled Materials - Per the LEED calculator for recycled material content, this project exceeds the established recycled material point credit rating by 100%.

The following key members of the project team are LEED Accredited Professionals:
  • Mary Pat Crozier, AIA, formerly of Furman University, Manager of Construction
  • Peter Noble, AIA, Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson and Abbott, Inc., Architect
  • Prescott May, AIA, Neal Prince and Partners, Associate Architect
  • Bryant Nixon, Triangle Construction, Inc, General Contractor
