Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

Why LEED and Furman University?

Awareness of the importance of environmental stewardship and energy conservation is reflected in the Furman University strategic plan. The plan states that Furman "…will strengthen its commitment to the environment by promoting the concept of sustainability through educational programs, environmentally sensitive campus operations and construction practices, and public awareness initiatives. Herman N. Hipp Hall was the first building in South Carolina to be LEED-certified and received certification at the gold level. The James B. Duke Library is the second building on campus to apply for LEED certification.

The rating system is voluntary and allows us to work within our traditional style of architecture and moderate budgets. It is based upon current proven building technology and evaluates environmental performance from a whole-building perspective over the life cycle of the building.
