Accessing Research Resources from Off-Campus

A Furman University network account is required for remote access to library research resources. Most students, faculty, and staff should already have a network account (it's what you use to log onto your computer, when it's connected directly to the Furman network). Students, faculty or staff who have not yet been issued a network account may request one in person at the Computing and Information Services (C&IS) Help Desk located on the Ground Floor of the library. You may wish to refer to the hours and contact information for the C&IS Help Desk if you plan to drop by.

Please note that the Library does not have the ability to create university network accounts or to retrieve passwords.

How does it work?

The Library uses a proxy server to provide off-campus access to subscription research resources. What is a proxy server? A proxy server is a special type of web server that can make it appear to these resources that you are on campus.

The proxy server is very easy to use. When you click on a link to a resource on the Library web site while you are on campus you will be connected directly to that resource. When you are off-campus clicking on links to resources will connect you to the proxy server and prompt you to login. You will need to login with your Furman network username and password. You do not need to set up or change anything in your web browser.

New! The proxy server now uses SSL to protect your login information.

Questions about network accounts

Questions regarding university network accounts or passwords should be directed to the C&IS Help Desk, at 294-3277.

Questions about the proxy server

If you have questions about the proxy server or want to report a problem accessing a resource through the proxy server please contact Scott Salzman, Systems Librarian, at 294-3204. Please provide as many of the following details as possible: which version of Windows/MacOS (or other operating system) you were using, which web browser you were using, which resource you were trying to access, which web page you were trying to connect from, the date and time you experienced the problem and a description of the problem or error message you encountered.
