Description: Life-size copper statue of a soldier. Tag reads E.M. Viquesney Sculpture; Americus, GA; with concrete base. The front of the granite base is engraved as follows: FURMAN MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR. LT. JOHN H. DAVID, JR., THE FIRST SOUTH CAROLINA OFFICER KILLED IN ACTION. LT. CHARLES S. GARDNER, SGT. CHARLES TIMMONS, JR. CORP. TALMADGE W. GERRALD. PVT. THOMAS J. LYON, JR. PVT. OTIS B. BRODIE. At the back of the granite base is engraved: MORE THAN FIVE HUNDRED FURMAN MEN SERVED IN THE WORLD WAR. Separate brass placard with granite base is 2' 9" x 3' and reads FURMAN UNIVERSITY IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO PAID THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN WORLD WAR II. A three column list of 55 names follows with the center column. Depicts a doughboy walking through shattered tree stumps strung with barbed wire, his rifle in his left hand and his right hand held high above his head, clutching a hand grenade. - Bust
