Description: Antique wooden Broadwood piano. This piano is an identical twin to a 1816 piano built for Beethoven. This piano has casework in mahogany, rosewood and inlaid brass. Its six octave compass has the original ivory keys with boxwood fronts. The serial number for this piece is 8655. According to Martha Clinkscales' "Makers of the Piano 1700-1820," this piece dates to 1820-21 with a case of walnut panels, mahogany crossbanding and black stringing with lid hook rings and four turned legs with ebony inlays and casters. The piece is double-strung for the first 6 notes and then triple-strung. The action in this piece is considered an English grand. Also, according to this reference, the piece was restored by John Watson in 1988. Broadwood piano fortes of this time period were larger and more powerful than other similar instruments. Dr. Milburn Price once commented that the piano was of value to Furman because it would offer audiences opportunities to hear Beethoven's works produced with the same tone and quality as the great composer heard. - Piano
