FURNITURE FOR TECHNOLOGY, TECHNOLOGY FOR COLLABORATION
Instructional Technology in the Science Library
One of the most important design guidelines for the Science Library was the focus on furniture and technology to enhance collaborative study. Every seat in the Science Library has easy access to an electrical plug and a data port. Technology was chosen for its mobility and portability, so that students could have access to computing from any place in the Library. Equipment was chosen for the group study rooms so groups of students, both large and small, could work together on one document, slide show, or spreadsheet. Below is a list of the Science Library technology with brief info on some uses.
- 2 Desktop computers and 8 laptop computers for public use. Found scattered around the Science Library. Usually, libraries create computer spaces where they place their computers. The Science Library has opted not to have designated spaces for computing, but to have all the whole library *computer* ready, which means all types of study/work can be done in all library spaces. All but two of the public computers are laptos which can be used anywhere in the Library. We have mouses available and a few extra keyboards. All seats in the Science Library have easy access to electrical outlets and data ports.
- 2 mobile digital projectors. ( found in the library- may be shelf behind Service Desk but do not need to be checked out) We have two digital projectors which can be hooked up to either your laptop, one of the Library's laptops, or the Wii console. These projectors will project what is on the screen of the laptop onto a wall, whiteboard or cork board. In this way, groups of students can work together without having to crowd around one monitor.
- 3 Bamboo Fun graphical tablets. Have to be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Many find these graphical tablets easier to use than a mouse in general, and particularly when using high visual software such as ChemDraw.Eventually we will have one for every computer in the Science Library. If you would like to use one with your personal laptop you can check out a CD with the drivers to install on your laptop.
- 2 QOMO wireless graphical tablets. Checked out at the Circulation Desk. These tablets can be used for most of the same functions as the Bamboo Fun tablets, However as these tablets are wireless they can be especially helpful when 3 or more students are using the projectors to working together as anyone can *drive* what is shown on the screen. Drivers available at the Circulation Desk if you want to use on your own laptop.
- Scanner. Color Scanner attached to the desktop computer next to Dr. Townes.
- Digital Camera. Has to be checked out at the Circulation desk.
- Wii Console. Wii console and games need to be checked out at the Circulation Desk.
