    Locate Articles and Books About the Goals and their Implementation

    Use the Library's guide to Resources for Music Education Research as your starting point.

    Helpful hints for searching online databases:

    • Remember that you can look for two kinds of articles -- articles about the goals and articles about their implementation.  Decide which kind of article you want and search accordingly.
    • Use keyword searching for easily-distinguished terms and phrases, such as "Goals 2000" and subject searching for terms and concepts related to implementation, such as "improvisation".
    • When you find an article that is close to what you want, use the subject headings or descriptors from that article to create a new search for similar articles.
    • Use the words and, or, and sometimes not to combine terms and get more specific. 
      • And means the article must have both words and will return a smaller number of results.
      • Or means the article must have one or the other word and will return a larger number of results.
      • Not can be tricky, for you can accidentally exclude citations that really are what you want.
    • Know your database.  ERIC and Education Abstracts Fulltext cover the broad field of education research.  IIMP and Music Index include education articles from the musical perspective.
