Overview

The Furman University Libraries provide resources, services, and technology to meet the curricular and research needs of students and faculty. The James B. Duke Library serves as the main library for the Furman University community, housing all general collections and services. Branch libraries include the Maxwell Music Library in the Daniel Music Building and the Ezell Science Reading Room in Plyler Hall.

Resources

The library collection includes 450,000 volumes, with over 10,000 new volumes added each year. Books and reference resources can searched using Alcuin, the library's online catalog. Articles from thousands of journals and magazines are available online through 100 research databases, in addition to the 1400 periodicals the library subscribes to in print. Multimedia items such as compact discs, digital video discs, and videotapes are located in both the main library and the music library. The main library also houses the university's archives and special collections.

Services

The Furman libraries provide a wide variety of
services to students and faculty to support study and teaching. Research assistance is available in the main library and the music library. Working closely with faculty, librarians offer course-integrated and/or assignment-specific research instruction sessions, including such topics as the research process, database searching, and evaluation of information resources. A student or faculty ID card is all that is required to borrow library materials. If a book or article that a student or faculty member needs is not available at Furman, it can be obtained via interlibrary loan at no charge. Library personnel include 11 faculty rank librarians, 15 paraprofessional staff members, and 60 student workers. The main library is open 101 hours per week, including weeknights until 1:00 a.m.

Technology

The libraries use information technology to make student and faculty research as effective and efficient as possible. Over 60 computers are provided for student use in the libraries and associated technological facilities. The
library catalog and most research databases can be used from any lab, office, or dorm room on campus. Off campus access to databases is available to students and faculty who have Furman Network login accounts. The James B. Duke Library houses the Center for Collaborative Learning and Communication, which provides multimedia production facilities and assistance. The main library also provides special reading equipment to accommodate visually handicapped students.
