Resources

The James B. Duke Library houses over 400,000 volumes, with about 10,000 new volumes added each year. Books and reference resources can searched using Alcuin, the library's online catalog, and are housed on the first through third floors. Articles from thousands of journals and magazines are available online through 100 research databases, in addition to the 1100 periodicals housed on the first floor. Multimedia items such as digital video discs, videotapes, and CD-ROM's can also be found on the first floor. The university's archives and special collections, including the Furman Archives, Baptist Historical Collection, and Rare Books, are located on the second floor.

Services

Most library services are available on the first floor. A student or faculty ID card is all that is required to borrow library materials at the Circulation Desk, which also provides access to course reserves. Research assistance is available at the Reference Desk. Working closely with faculty, librarians offer course-integrated and/or assignment-specific research instruction sessions, including such topics as the research process, database searching, and evaluation of information resources, in the Bradshaw Multimedia Presentation Room. If a book or article that a student or faculty member needs is not available at Furman, it can be obtained via interlibrary loan at no charge. Interlibrary loan requests may be placed at any location using an online form and picked up at the Circulation Desk. The library is open 101 hours per week, including weeknights until 1:00 a.m.

Technology

The James B. Duke Library houses 40 computers for student use. The
Center for Collaborative Learning and Communication, which provides multimedia production facilities and assistance, is located on the ground floor of the library. Special reading equipment to accommodate visually handicapped students is available on the first floor near the Circulation Desk. Printing from library computers is free to patrons with a Furman ID.
