Library Highlights from 2007-2008

Personnel

The library hired Robyn Andrews to be the daytime circulation supervisor and Caroline Mills, as the Access Services and Information Fluency Librarian. Elizabeth McSherry assumed the University Collections Manager position.

During this time, Derek Stewart, the Document Delivery Assistant and Melissa Bateman the University Collections Manager, left the library.

Policies regarding rank, evaluation and promotion of library faculty were submitted and approved by the Faculty.

Facilities

The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the library LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficient Design) certification at the gold level.

Planning for the construction of the Science Library continued. The Science journal titles found in JSTOR were weeded.

Services

The reference department and the Music library launched blogs and created a presence in Facebook and Second Life.

The configuration of the printers was shifted in order to provide patrons with better service and perhaps cut down on the number of printouts left unclaimed.

Pascal Delivers, a rapid delivery service for books, was implemented allowing library patrons to borrow items from other South Carolina academic libraries. This program provides access to over 10 million volumes.

ILLiad, a resource sharing management software, was implemented allowing for much more efficient inter-library loan operations and desktop delivery of articles requested through inter-library loan.

The DigiCenter has amassed a collection of over 20,000 digital images and is pursuing a pilot project in collaboration with three instructors to create a novel digital collection on New Orleans. Go to: http://digicenter.furman.edu/

Resources

Over $1.58 million was spent on library materials.

A Greek bible valued at $20,000 was donated by Dr. & Mrs. Robert Schwartz.

Due to draconian cuts to the PASCAL (Partnership Among South Carolina Libraries) budget, the LexisNexis and Access Science databases were cancelled. The library was able to purchase WestLaw in lieu of LexisNexis and AccessScience through a collaboration with other libraries.

Programs

Special Collections organized two major exhibits:

“Local Color” an exhibit of local professional artists, provided in partnership with Trillium (formerly known as TRAM).

“Traditions Lost and Found,” was a photographic exploration of Furman traditions. It had a companion online exhibition in the form of a blog , which allowed the viewers to post comments, adding an interactive component.

Special Collections sponsored two receptions: one celebrating the donation of the Greek bible; another celebrating the creation of the South Carolina Poetry Archives.
